Mini Review: Call of Duty Ghosts Nemesis Map Pack

Hey everyone, its that time again!

Another DLC for Call of Duty Ghosts has arrived. The Final DLC of the season, named Nemesis, touches down and brings back a few of my favorite things.

Here is a video of the official preview. You can also see this on the Call of Duty website.

So, as usual, this DLC adds four more maps to the multiplayer experience and the final chapter in Extinction. I doubt any more DLC comes out for Ghosts since the next Call of Duty game, Advanced Warfare, comes out in just a few months. However, with the recent move by Activision to add another developer into the Call of Duty rotation cycle, we just may see a little bit more for Ghosts. I will take a wait and see approach for that. Anyways, to the maps!

1. Dynasty

Dynasty allows for a combination of play styles. It has tons of close quarters space, a good amount of medium range area, and a little bit of long range areas as well. The setting is an Asian village. The map itself looks nice, and promotes run and gun classes with its alleys and buildings. However, in my time playing, I also noticed a good bit of shotgun camping in buildings or snipers camping whatever spots they could that let them see high traffic areas. The map brings back one of my favorite killstreaks from the past, the Harrier jet. While the first part of the Harrier streak, the airstrike, is not as effective on this map as it would be on an open map, the second part, where the plane hovers above and rains down death on enemies is very useful as the alleys have little to no cover and some angles let the plane kill people in buildings as well. All in all, this map is well designed.

2. Subzero

This map is a frozen Canadian submarine facility. The map itself looks very nice. On one side is a set of buildings that allow for close quarters and medium or long range combat. The outside part of the map does the same. However, while playing, I found that 95% of my games on the map tended to become people fighting over control of the buildings and staying inside. Snipers would guard entrances with great lines of site while close quarters team mates covered their backs. If a team does this efficiently enough, the other team is locked out and the game can become frustrating for the team not able to get a foothold. This map has a special killstreak reward as well. You basically call in a blizzard, and a few tornado like creatures that are part of the storm kills enemies. Seems like on this map the building is the preferred area to be, which is sad because the outside area is very nice and balanced to play on as well, but the building and its importance in being able to camp and rack up killstreaks overrides that.

3. Goldrush

Set in an abandoned goldmine, this map is very busy. It has multiple levels since you can go inside the mine, or above it. In the middle of the map, a lift moves up or down at random, providing or taking away advantages in firefights. Two mine carts move through the map. You can get into them. While playing, I have found that the carts offer no protection whatsoever to the player riding inside it. Even if you lay down in the cart, your feet or head are still visible and it is easy to be killed. Also, the map feels unbalanced in that one side starts on the high side of the map and the other on the low side. A team needs only to camp the high side decently well and the other team will be reduced to spawning down below, and will have to run to areas that have little to no cover from the high side of the map. You can flank around, but it is ridiculously hard to do against a decent team. While the point of most Call of Duty games is run and gun, its become harder and harder to make that work as efficiently as it did back in Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2. So, personally, this map is my least favorite of all of them. Anyway, the map has a special killstreak reward. Basically, you get two or three wolves that run around and kill people. Basically they are slightly upgraded dogs. The killstreak doesn't usually last long as everyone knows they are coming and focuses on killing them as quickly as possible.

4. Showtime

Showtime is a remake of Call of Duty Modern Warfare's map Shipment. It is set here as a death arena where players duke it out for a crowd of people. It is an accurate remake, with the exception that Infinity Ward added an extra layer on the outside of the arena to make the map bigger. The map has multiple killstreak rewards, in the form of jackpot prizes. These can be deadly gas in the corners of the map, 4 sentry guns that rain death down upon the enemies all over the map, or a set of care packages (6-9 I think) dropping down into the arena for your team to grab. Usually these are really good care packages too. In multiple games I've seen the killstreak care package drop reward drop the other two jackpot prizes and things like Lokis, Heli Pilots, etc. If your team is on the other end of this, it makes for a bad day as there is literally no where to hide. The game play is just like shipment was; fast and hectic. While I don't do that well usually, (its really hard to do well unless you just get lucky in your spawn and how the enemy moves around) the map is fun. Easily my favorite map.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, the map pack is a good finishing job by the Infinity Ward team for Ghosts. While I severely dislike the map Goldrush, overall the other three maps more than make up for it. While I personally wish that one of the Call of Duty developers would take and remake all the maps for all the games into one big playlist, I know that they won't. So, we live with re-imagined remakes of previous maps. Spawns do not seem to be as big an issue in this map pack as they were the last one.

My score: 80/100.

Have fun all!

Trying out the Destiny Beta

The beta for Bungie's new game, Destiny, is out on the XBox 360. See my thoughts below after a few hours playing.

Visit www.bungie.net for more on Destiny

Destiny is a combination of games in my opinion. It feels like a combination of Halo, a Call of Duty/Battlefield mix, and Mass Effect. Parts of the game seem to be like an MMO, with the ability to see other players in the campaign map zones and the common area. While in the campaign zones, teamed or not, you can help each other out, but not really hurt each other, except for the possibility of someone getting good at stealing mob kills. While I have not seen that, I do see that it could possibly happen since multiple people can damage the same enemies. In some cases, its encouraged with random special encounters. The one I ran into with a few friends required a Devil Walker Tank (a large spider-like tank that has massive amounts of hit points) to be taken down in less than 5 minutes.

While running around, we noticed something else. While you can just run around, you get less experience for killing high level bad guys than you do for doing a mission that involves killing lower level bad guys. We tested this by running through the Strike mission labeled The Devil's Lair at level 5. I moved up about half an experience bar. We went back and did the level 2 quest at the beginning of the map itself and leveled up easily. Hopefully, this is just a way for Bungie to push people to do the quests in the beta and will be toned down in the retail release of the game.

Multiplayer (aka The Crucible), was not as fun. It may have been a case of us coming into a room of people who do nothing but play the matchmaking thus having that age old map knowledge advantage, but it was hard to have fun when you pretty much died within 3-5 seconds of spawning while the other team has 3-4 people with 15+ killstreaks. I'll be giving this another go tonight to see if that was the case.

Apparently, there is a level cap on the game at level 8, possibly to get people to try out all the class options, so I'll likely make another character as well tonight.

All in all, I recommend this game to everyone. I plan to pick it up the day it releases and I plan to put some serious hours into it.

See you guys in the game!

Mini Review: Gotham City Imposters

Hey guys,

So, Gotham City Imposters was listed for free on XBox Live for Gold Subscribers. I've messed around with it for a bit, and here's my two cents on it.

1. Visuals

Visually, the game looks nice. Its not trying to wow you with graphics. They are somewhat cartoonish and remind me of Team Fortress Two actually. However, when things are not lagging, it looks nice and has a good flow. I did not notice any major issues when the game played properly. You have the option later on to customize your wannabe Batman and your Joker gang outfits.

2. Weapon balance

Unfortunately, I have to admit, that I got incredibly tired of people spamming the invisibility skill or the katana/roller skates combo. Also, sniping is harder to pickup than it is in other games. More punishing for not getting a headshot too.

3. Match types

Plenty of game modes to play.  It may have been the fact that the game is free to Gold members right now, but the deathmatch option had alot of lag and was very jarring. Played an option that is basically Kill Confirmed from Call of Duty and it ran fine for the most part.

Final Thoughts:

For free, its a great pickup and time waster. While its not Call of Duty, it is a fun way to spend an evening every now and then. If you go in with a friend or two, its even more fun as you describe the mayhem going on with how you died or how you killed someone to each other. The lag issues should die down as the "Free for Gold" rush dies down a bit.

My score: 85/100.

Mini Review: Call of Duty Ghosts Invasion Map Pack

Hey everyone,

I've been busy messing around with the new DLC for Call of Duty Ghosts. So, let's get to it.

Here is a video preview from the official Call of Duty Website

This DLC adds four new maps to the Ghosts multiplayer experience and another chapter to the Extinction game mode. I haven't done anything with the Extinction part, so this will focus on the multiplayer maps.

1. Pharoah

This map is a large 1920's era archaeologists' dig site. It has good detail and lots of open space for snipers as well as some tight corridors and buildings for those who prefer to use SMGs and such. The map has a secret room, that is opened by turning three torches that are in different rooms on the map. I do not know if the same person has to turn all the torches or if it is a combination of them being turned. Inside the secret room, there is a random care package that can be just about anything. I have seen it be a Sat Com, a Loki, and a MAAWS. Once the care package is taken, there is a short time limit to escape the room. If you do not, then the room's trap activates and you burn to death. Also, the map's super reward for completing a care package challenge is called the Blessing of Anubis. This reward gives you EVERY perk in the game. For four lives. Powerful, yet balanced as you do not get any increase in health so a headshot will still kill you. Spawning on the map needs to be worked on as multiple times I would spawn in front of multiple enemies and such.

2. Mutiny

This map is a Caribbean port town. A wooden ship is docked in town. The setting is a night-time setting. The map is much smaller. Probably the smallest map. Lots of tight spaces for those knifers and SMG runners. Most people tended to want to camp on the docked Pirate ship as it gave elevation and cover. Two super rewards here. First is calling in pirate ships to bombard the enemy team. Didn't do much for me when I got it. Second is calling in two ghost pirates as squadmates that would go out and kill enemies with you. Moderately effective as both would usually get one or two kills before being destroyed. Spawn issues continued here.

3. Departed

This is a Mexican city during the Day of the Dead festival. Well balanced map. Lots of corridors and open areas for sniping. Super reward killstreak on this map is the Death Mariachi. Basically you are a maniac with guns. When you kill someone, their body becomes a squadmate who follows you and kills people too. This reward is really powerful as all enemies show up red no matter where they are as far as I can tell. Music plays while the Mariachi is alive. I have this reward three times. Once I was killed quickly as the entire enemy team showed up right as I got it and I had no help. Second time I got five kills. Third time I was the Mariachi the entire game and went 16-1. From my playing, both teams can get this once, but I am unsure if each team can have it at the same time.  While spawns  were a bit of an issue, they were not quite as bad as spawns on the other maps. My favorite map of this release.

4. Favela remake

This plays just like Favela from Modern Warfare 2. Looks better, but people still tended to camp the Ice Cream shop and Barber shop. The AC-130 killstreak is brought back, with a different name, for the super reward killstreak. Sadly, this map is not an ideal map for that killstreak as it has so many buildings to hide in. A more open map like Wasteland would have been a better fit for the reward. Maybe the Chopper Gunner would have been a better choice as it has better building penetration abilities. Spawns were not very good here either.

Final thoughts:

All in all, the map pack is a good one. IT gives good variety and the killstreak rewards are fun. IF they fix the spawn issues then the gameplay on these maps will improve immensely.

My score: 75/100. If they fix the spawns then it will increase.

Show to Watch: The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes

As we all know, The Marvel Universe is incredibly popular in all its forms. The movies do well in theaters and on Bluray/DVD. The comics are doing well. There are tons of TV shows about Marvel characters. People (like myself) will argue who would win a fight between a Marvel character and a DC character.

Knowing all this, I found myself flipping through my Netflix instant streaming account. There, I found a show that caught my eye; The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

It looked like a kids show. It is a kids show. But I gave it a shot, because the comic book nerd in me wouldn't let me keep going. After having watched both seasons, I have to say that I am impressed by how well it did. Even as a kids show, it told the story of the characters pretty well. For those of you looking to enjoy more superhero action, this show will fit the bill. I also think it will help younger viewers learn about the Marvel universe and understand it a bit better while keeping them entertained.

So, I recommend going out and watching this.

Go. Do it! Do it now!

Tonight I'm Frakking You

NBA 2K13 Annoyances

So, maybe its just me. Maybe not though.

I've been playing NBA 2K13 in my career mode. I'm playing as a PG/SG with the 3pt shooter style. Since the other teams have to play me close on the perimeter that should give me plenty of assists right?

WRONG!!

Having played several games over the last few weeks, I've noticed a trend. When the cpu passes to a player, if they have even an inch or less of space, they make the shot. If I pass to them, they miss it 75% of the time. The odds of the cpu guy making the shot drops even more if they are wide open, to about 10-15% chance that they make it . This leads to me being annoyed because I lose out on 8-10 assists each game, which are big for someone who is a PG in this game.

Another thing I've noticed? My teammates will purposely come stand right by me and just stand there. I have had one of them just follow me around the entire offensive possession. I don't know what causes that, but it annoys the crap out of me because then one defensive player can guard two of my guys.

The other thing that annoys me is the teammate grading system. I have had several times where a screen and then my own defender blocks me from chasing the ball handler. He scores and I lose a good bit of teammate score because I allowed my guy to score. I also seem to randomly have my assignment changed in the middle of an opposing team's shot, often blaming me for the score when it was not even the guy I was defending.

These are just a few things that annoyed me with this game. I like the game. I do. I just wish some of the AI was a bit better.
